A Kunitz-type serine protease inhibitor multivalent human urine derived, with a potential, anti-fibrinolytic and anticoagulant activities. When administered, ulinastatin (urine or trypsinogen inhibitor) inhibits the activity of a variety of enzymes, including trypsin, chymotrypsin, thrombin, kallikrein, plasmin, elastase, cathepsin , lipase, hyaluronidase, factors IXa, Xa, XIa and Xian, and polymorphonuclear leukocyte elastase. Moreover, ulinastatin inhibits excessive release of pro-inflammatory mediators such as tumor-necrosis factor alpha, interleukin-6 and -8, and chemokines. Overall, these agents can improve microcirculation, blood flow and function of the tissue and may protect organ damage.
