Stigmasterol (aka Wulzen anti-stiffness factor) belongs to a group of plant sterols or phytosterols. Phytosterols are insoluble in water but soluble in most organic solvents and contain an alcoholic functional group.
Stigmasterol is a precursor in the preparation of synthetic progesterone, a valuable human hormone that plays an important physiological role in regenerative mechanisms of regulation and tissues associated with estrogenic effects as well as an intermediate in the biosynthesis of androgens, Estrogens and glucocorticosteroids. It is also used as a precursor of vitamin D3.
