The safety and efficacy of alprazolam and hydroxyzine administered orally as a surgical premedication were compared in a double-blind, controlled trial. Sixty-five patients were given either 1mg alprazolam or hydroxyzine 75 mg, one to two hours before surgery. This study shows that alprazolam and hydroxyzine are safe and effective oral premedication. However, Alprazolam hydroxyzine is preferable in terms of the anxiolytic and side effects.
