Alprazolam hcl

The safety and efficacy of alprazolam and hydroxyzine administered orally as a surgical premedication were compared in a double-blind, controlled trial. Sixty-five patients were given either 1mg alprazolam or hydroxyzine 75 mg, one to two hours before surgery. The anxiety evaluated by the patient and the anesthesiologist, the patient is a visual analog scale, using the analog anesthetist and ordinal ratings. Sedation was assessed by the anesthetist, the same two methods. Amnesia was evaluated by a simple memory test. Safety was evaluated recording sub-effects and measurement of hemodynamic variables. Premedication with Alprazolam a slight reduction in anxiety (28%) (P <0.01), while hydroxyzine had no detectable effect. comparing sedation and memory test showed no difference between the two premedication. Less serious side effects were observed in the hydroxyzine group. Changes in blood pressure were more pronounced in the hydroxyzine group. This study shows that alprazolam and hydroxyzine are safe and effective oral premedication. However, Alprazolam hydroxyzine is preferable in terms of the anxiolytic and side effects.
