Stigmasterol (aka Wulzen rigidity of anti-factor) is one of a group of plant sterols, or phytosterols. Phytosterols are insoluble in water but soluble in most organic solvents and an alcohol functional group.
Stigmasterol is used as a precursor in the preparation of synthetic progesterone, a precious human hormone that plays an important physiological role in the regulation and tissue to estrogen related reconstruction mechanisms and to act as an intermediate in the biosynthesis of androgens , oestrogens and corticosteroids. It is also used as a precursor of vitamin D3.
