Aldosterone is a hormone that increases the absorption of sodium and water and the release (secretion) of potassium in the kidneys. This increases blood volume and increases the blood pressure as well. In contrast, drugs that interfere with aldosterone secretion or action are used as antihypertensives. An example is spironolactone, which reduces blood pressure by blocking aldosterone receptor. Aldosterone is a part of the renin-angiotensin system. A measurement of aldosterone in the blood, plasma aldosterone concentration (PAC) are called plasma renin activity (PRA) as a PAC / PRA ratio are compared.
