Description:
Β-alanine (or beta-alanine) is a natural β-amino acid, in which there are amino acids in which the amino group in the β-position of the carboxylate group (ie, at a distance of two atoms, see 1). The name IUPAC for beta-alanine would be 3-aminopropionic. Unlike its normal homologue, α-alanine, has no chiral β-alanine center.
Β-alanine has not been used in the biosynthesis of larger proteins or enzymes. It is produced in vivo by the degradation of dihydrouracil and carnosine. It is part of the carnosine peptides of natural origin and anserine and pantothenic acid (vitamin B5), which itself is part of coenzyme A. Under normal conditions, β-alanine is metabolized to acetic acid.
