Salbutamol (DCI) or salbutamol (USAN) is a short-acting β2-adrenergic receptor agonist, which is used for the relief of bronchospasm under conditions such as asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.
Salbutamol sulphate is usually administered by inhalation for direct effect on the smooth shell of the bronchi. This is usually a metered dose inhaler (MDI), nebulizers or other proprietary dispensing devices achieved (eg B. Rotahaler or AUTOHALER). These delivery forms the maximum effect of salbutamol within five to twenty minutes dosing can take place, if some relief is seen immediately. Salbutamol may also be administered orally as an inhalant or intravenous.
