University of California researchers said type 1 diabetes immunotherapy has great prospects

University of California, San Francisco researchers said on the 25th, a use of the patient's own immune cells immune therapy shows great promise in the treatment of type 1 diabetes in early clinical trials.

The researchers in the new issue of the day the American magazine "Science Translational Medicine" the report said, the use of this therapy in patients with type I diabetes blood regulation of immune cells called T cells, proving the safety of only Phase I clinical trials no serious side effects, and these cells can be present in the patient at least one year.

First author, UCSF professor Jeffrey Blue Stone said in a statement that if this new therapy can prove in further experiments in the protection of human insulin secretory capacity, then it will become "rules of the game-changer."

In Phase I clinical trials, the researchers first extracted from the body type 1 diabetes 2 small cups of blood, and then isolated from 2 million to 4 million of regulatory T cells in laboratory culture after 1500 times their number may increase. Blue Stone said, the activity of regulatory T cells cultured by such a process enhancements, fixes type I diabetics have defective immune responses, and prolonged survival in a patient.

The trial in 14 years to 43 years 18 patients were divided into four groups, receiving a varying number of autologous regulatory T cell injection, which is the minimum number 5000000 regulatory T cells, most are 2.6 billion regulatory T cells. The results showed that all four groups were well tolerated, and up to 25% of the cells over a year but also in the patient is detected.

Based on this result, the researchers are now ready to phase Ⅱ clinical trials to verify the effectiveness of this therapy. Blue Stone said: "The use of the patient's own cells are the new pillars of the drug development process exciting, and we look forward to regulatory T cells in the future become an important part of the treatment of diabetes."
