What is topical acyclovir?


Acyclovir topically (for the skin) is an antiviral drug. It slows down the growth and spread of the herpes virus, so the body can fight the infection.

Acyclovir topical cream is used to treat cold sores.

Acyclovir ointment is used to treat genital herpes lesions.

Acyclovir will not cure or prevent herpes, but it can reduce the symptoms of the infection.

Topical acyclovir can also be used for purposes that do not result in this product.

What is the most important information I should know about topical acyclovir?
Follow all instructions on the label of the drug and packaging. Tell all of your health care provider about all your medical conditions, allergies and medications you are using.

To ensure that acyclovir is locally safe for you, tell your doctor if you:

Weakness of the immune system (caused by illness or by the use of certain drugs).
FDA pregnancy category B. Topical acyclovir should not harm an unborn baby. Let us know if you are pregnant or plan your doctor during the treatment to get pregnant. The herpes virus can be transmitted from an infected mother to her baby during childbirth. If you have genital herpes, it is very important to prevent herpes lesions during your pregnancy so that you do not have a genital lesion when your baby is born.

It is not known whether topical acyclovir passes into breast milk or whether it could harm the baby. Let us know if you are breastfeeding a baby are your doctor. You should not breastfeed if you have a herpes lesion on or near your chest.

Acyclovir should not be used in children younger than 12 years.
