Description:
Trilostane is an inhibitor of 3-β-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase, which is used in the treatment of Cushing's syndrome.
It is perhaps better known under the trade name Vetoryl. It was withdrawn from the US market in April 1994 but it was recently approved in 2008 for the treatment of Cushing's disease (Hyperandrenokortizismus) in dogs.
The safety and efficacy of trilostane have been presented in several studies. Success is due to the improvement of both blood samples as well as physical symptoms measured (increased appetite and activity level and reduced wheezing, thirst and urination).
Only one other drug, Anipryl (selegiline) is approved by the FDA to treat Cushing's disease in dogs, but just to treat simple, hypophysenabhängige Cushing.
It has been used as an inhibitor of progesterone.
