Description:
Thymine is one of four nucleobases of the nucleic acid of the DNA represented by the G-C-A-T letters.
Thymidine can be phosphorylated by one, two or three phosphoric acid groups, so that each TMP, TDP, TTP or (thymidine mono-, di- or triphosphate).
Thymine could also be a target for the actions of 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) in the treatment of cancer. 5-FU can be an analogue of the metabolic thymine (DNA synthesis) or uracil (in RNA synthesis). Substitution thereof analogue inhibits DNA synthesis in actively dividing cells.
thymine bases are hydantoins often oxidized after the death of an organism over time.
