Description:
Acriflavine is an antiseptic. It has the form of an orange or brown powder. It can be harmful to the eyes or inhaled. It is a dye and colors the skin and can cause irritation. Commercial preparations are often proflavine mixtures. It is known from a variety of trade names.
Acriflavine was used during World War II against sleeping sickness. It is derived from acridine. The hydrochloride form is more annoying than the neutral form.
Acriflavine is also used as a treatment for fungal infections of the external tank fish.In recent years acriflavin Anti-cancer activity has been demonstrated.
