The salt form of ergotamine tartrate, an alkaloid and alpha-adrenergic pin with vasoconstrictor activity. Ergotamine tartrate selectively binds to alpha-adrenergic receptors which stimulate vascular smooth muscle and causes vasoconstriction in both arteries and veins. The serotonin ergotamine tartrate also blocks the receptors of 5-HT 1D, which also causes vasoconstriction of cerebral blood vessels. caused thereby narrowing of blood vessels in the brain, increase blood flow and pressure in the cerebral arteries can reduce and can ease the pain of cluster headaches.
